The next generation needs to know about the world they’re living in. Crown’s Social Studies Education degree program in Minnesota is for those called to teach social studies in classrooms for grades 5-12 and is structured to meet the Minnesota Professional Educators Licensing and Standards Board Social Studies licensure requirements.

GEO 221 - World Regional Geography

This course introduces the basic principles of geography by focusing on the diversity and interdependence of world regions. The emphasis is primarily cultural or human geography and secondarily physical geography.

SED 446 - Secondary Methods of Social Studies

A study of the purposes, methods, planning, instruction, and evaluation techniques for teaching in secondary classrooms. The course provides new research, strategies, and philosophies to best meet the needs of adolescents. A corresponding clinical field experience augments classroom readings, discussions, and activities. An emphasis is placed on developmentally appropriate practices, reading across the curriculum, diverse student needs, and multilingual learners. Clinical field experience in an approved site is required.

EDU 314 - Multicultural and Diverse Learners

This course provides an understanding of diverse learners including: exceptional students, English language learners, and those from diverse cultures. The course will explore the challenges to learning, literacy, testing, and social issues for these learners, as well as educational law, parent rights, and roles within the community of learners. Practical strategies for working with diverse learners will be emphasized. Sixteen clock hours of field experience at a school site are required.

What is the Faculty to Student Ratio?

Our faculty to student ratio is 17:1. We intentionally aim to keep our class sizes small. This allows us to maintain academic excellence and strong relationships between faculty and students. At Crown College, every student is a person and not just another number.

Will my credits transfer?

We generally accept credits from accredited institutions as long as the student maintained a C or higher in the course. To see a full list of what classes will transfer, you can visit Transferology or contact our registrar office at registrar@crown.edu.

What academic resources are available?

Available to all students, our Student Success Office is a great resource for students. Services offered by the Student Success Office are designed to increase academic success and build community.
