Admitted to practice in all levels of Minnesota state court and the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota.
My teaching and scholarship have been focused on the integration of Christian faith and the Scriptures in the practice of law, particularly in our understanding of what doing justice and loving our neighbors should look like. I have practiced criminal law as both a defense attorney and a prosecutor during 17 years in Minnesota courts. My aim in practicing law has been to heal the broken, protect the vulnerable, and seek restoration for all those involved in criminal cases.
The command to do justice is a major theme in God’s covenants with His people (Gen 9:1-17, 18:17-19) and the Mosaic law (Lev 19:15-16), and it is often joined with commands to protect the vulnerable. The administration of law in our country has a God-given purpose and design (Rom 13:1-7; Matt 28:18-20; Col 1:16, 2:15) and we should use the law to fulfill God’s good purposes of correction and restoration among people until the Lord makes all things new.
